Does Tort Reform Really Help Doctors?

Three years ago, Texas passed legislation limiting the amount of money that can be paid out on a medical malpractice lawsuit. As the third anniversary of that legislation approaches, members of the Texas Medical Association are saying the law has helped. Specifically, a survey of 1154 members found it is now easier to recruit new doctors in communities with tort reform, even in high-risk specialties.

Patients are seeing a benefit as well because more physicians are willing to "accept patients with complex or high-risk problems, or offer patients new services."

In Michigan, tort laws limit the amount of damages to $500,000 and make it more difficult to bring a malpractice suit than before. As a result, insurance premiums are lower and Michigan is able to recruit doctors from nearby states like Pennsylvania.

Patients in Michigan seem to be gaining benefits from tort reform as well. Doctors are more willing to perform higher-risk procedures and more specialists are being recruited, making it easier to find the care patients need.

In our continuing efforts to improve our products and solicit feedback, AdvancedMD contracted a third party research company to survey our existing clients. The survey included eight questions and a free-form field to obtain candid feedback from respondents.

The results were quite enlightening. First of all, our clients were eager to tell us what they thought. Our response rate was 19.5%...nearly triple the industry average for these kinds of surveys. Additionally, the majority of our respondents used our software at least 30 hours a week, meaning they were very familiar with it and knew what they were talking about. The responses were overwhelmingly positive, with many comments reflecting what one customer wrote when she responded: "I've been very happy with AdvancedMD and feel it is far superior to systems I've previously used.”

Our overall approval rating was 91% with "ease of use" and "product features" being the top factors for that score. Other areas in the survey were:

  • AdvancedMD software features - 93% were satisfied with current features.
  • Ease-of-use - 97% agreed it was easy to use.
  • Software updates - 91% thought they were beneficial.
  • Communication from AdvancedMD - 89% satisfied.
  • Value for the money - 92% agreed AdvancedMD was a good value.
  • Customer service - 85% satisfied.
  • 90% would recommend AdvancedMD to a colleague.

It's great to have such satisfied customers and we appreciate suggestions on how we can provide better products and services.
