EHR/EMR Meaningful Use Attestation

EHR Attestation is part of qualifying for meaningful use. There are many criteria that an eligible provider must meet to attest use of their certified EHR technology. This page serves as a reference guide to the proper ways of EHR/EMR attestation to help you qualify for meaningful use. All EHR eligible providers will provide attestation through a secure mechanism for 2011 and 2012. You must identify the certified EHR technology in use and submit reports on product use and clinical metrics. Prior to their attestation, EHR eligible providers will need to register their intent to seek incentive dollars. For more information on EHR attestation criteria and EHR incentive programs, visit the CMS web site.

New Registration Process Announced for EHR/EMR Meaningful Use Attestation

On January 1, 2011, a web-based registration function was launched at the CMS web site. Eligible providers of an EHR give the following information when registering.

  • Name, NPI, business address and business phone
  • Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) to which you want the incentive payment made
  • Incentive Program (Medicare or Medicaid)
    • If Medicaid – must chose a State
  • All Medicare EPs must be enrolled in PECOS
More information on the EHR attestation process and updated information is available from the CMS web site dedicated to the EHR incentive programs.

In 2011, I Will Attest to my Use of my EHR. What Reports and Information Will CMS Require for this EHR Attestation?

Stage 1 (2011 and 2012)
To meet certain objectives/measures, 80% of your patients must have records in the certified EHR technology. The AdvancedMD EHR will provide a report that shows your percentage of system use for each of the Core and Alternate Core measures. As an eligible professional you are required to report on 20 of 25 meaningful use (MU) objectives. The AdvancedMD EHR system will help you to report on use of the AdvancedMD EHR. You will use a report created from the EHR that shows your use of the system for each objective that requires a percentage base response to CMS. The denominator will be the total number of unique patient’s seen for the reporting period, or actions taken on behalf of those patients, whose records are kept using certified EHR technology. The numerator will show the number of patient’s that objective was met for. Some of the objectives are answered with a simple yes-no response, and the AdvancedMD EHR will not provide a report on that objective. Your AdvancedMD EHR will provide a report on the Clinical Quality Measures you have specified as well to use for your Stage 1 EHR attestation requirements.

Once I Attest to Use AdvancedMD EHR Technology, When will I Receive Payment from CMS?

You may register your intent to use certified EHR technology in 2011 starting January 1, 2011. CMS launched their Meaningful Use attestation portal in April 2011. Payment is expected to take 15-45 days following validated attested use of certified EHR technology.
