Abstract
When it comes to preparing for the October 1, 2015 medical coding conversion, some practices may be well on their way, but others might need some last minute tips to get ready. Focusing on areas such as your budget, training, coding and technology will help you get a quick start on your planning. Practices that have been slow to get started should start planning now so they won’t miss out on any reimbursements come October. These blogs will give you some key areas to focus on before the deadline.

ICD-10: Are you ready?
There two types of planners in this world–ants and grasshoppers. The fable of the hard-working ant that prepares for winter and the fun-loving grasshopper that ends up short is the perfect cautionary tale for ICD-10. When it comes to preparing for the October 1, 2015 medical coding conversion, some practices may be well on their way, but others might need some last minute tips to get ready. To help all of you grasshoppers out there, we’ve put together this list of Last minute tips to prepare for ICD-10.

Some practices have delayed their ICD-10 preparation because they are hoping for another delay, but the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has indicated that isn’t going to happen. Any claims with a date of service on or after October 1, 2015 will be rejected if they do not contain a valid ICD-10 code.1 Practices that have been slow to get started should start planning now so they won’t miss out on any reimbursements come October.

Tip #1 Identify areas that will be affected
The first step in preparing begins with taking a moment to think of how your practice will be affected by the change from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM. Identify key systems, departments and staff members who will need to get on board. Physicians and staff will need training, practice management systems will need updating and vendors and payers will need to be contacted to talk about their readiness. Verifying that your Electronic Health Record (EHR) and practice management bundle (or separate systems) is up for the ICD-10 challenge may be the most important step to ensuring your own compliance.

The AdvancedMD MyICD-10 Timeline is a one-stop location for ICD-10 training and education. “[Our] patients are very well-educated and well-informed, and they want to see results quickly. The practice has to run extremely efficiently and be accessible to them. The nice thing about [AdvancedMD] is it has allowed me to be more efficient both in and out of the office. Now I don’t have to come back into the office, which is great for my family and everything else. It saves me a lot of time – probably an hour a day on the three days I work in the second office.”
