Tip #3 Schedule training for key staff members
Coders and physicians both will need to train on the new code sets, new documentation that will be required and any changes in technology as a result of the switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10. Clinical staff will not only need to learn the coding changes, but also need to understand how their documentation will affect the ability to bill. Investing time and money now will ease the pain of an ICD-10 learning curve.1
Coding and billing staff are going to need the most training to make sure the new code set correctly records diagnoses. Administrative staff will need to learn the ICD-10 codes as well as how the conversion will impact office workflow. When designing your training plan, you’ve got to consider all the variables and then decide when, how and where you’re going to conduct training. Again, think of the impact to your budget and make sure to include the cost of any downtime your office will have during training sessions. If your provider charges for training, be sure to factor that into your ICD-10 budget.
