Abstract
When it comes to preparing for the October 1, 2015 medical coding conversion, some practices may be well on their way, but others might need some last minute tips to get ready. Focusing on areas such as your budget, training, codingand technology will help you get a quick start on your planning. Practices that have been slow to get started should start planning now so they won’t miss out on any reimbursements come October. These blogs will give you some key areas to focus on before the deadline.

Tip #3 Schedule training for key staff members
Coders and physicians both will need to train on the new code sets, new documentation that will be required and any changes in technology as a result of the switch from ICD-9 to ICD-10. Clinical staff will not only need to learn the coding changes, but also need to understand how their documentation will affect the ability to bill. Investing time and money now will ease the pain of an ICD-10 learning curve.1

Coding and billing staff are going to need the most training to make sure the new code set correctly records diagnoses. Administrative staff will need to learn the ICD-10 codes as well as how the conversion will impact office workflow. When designing your training plan, you’ve got to consider all the variables and then decide when, how and where you’re going to conduct training. Again, think of the impact to your budget and make sure to include the cost of any downtime your office will have during training sessions. If your provider charges for training, be sure to factor that into your ICD-10 budget.

From webinars to practice-specific training, many EHR and practice management vendors are focusing on programs and information to get their clients ready for the switch. EHR vendors can be helpful resources for their clients during the ICD-10 transition. Ask about programs and training they might have to help you prepare.

“[Our] patients are very well-educated and well-informed, and they want to see results quickly. The practice has to run extremely efficiently and be accessible to them. The nice thing about [AdvancedMD] is it has allowed me to be more efficient both in and out of the office. Now I don’t have to come back into the office, which is great for my family and everything else. It saves me a lot of time – probably an hour a day on the three days I work in the second office.”
