AdvancedMD has partnered with Surescripts and the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs to modify our ePrescribing workflow to meet the new regulations. The new NCPDP SCRIPT 2017071 has a subset of Potency code standards required to be implemented by September 1, 2021.
These codes are the units selected when writing a prescription and some will be sunset on August 19.
In 2019 we started phase one of this change by introducing a dispensing guide. It assists prescribers in selecting packaging or calculating dosing. The final phase of the potency code sunset is providing only the options available for that drug (in a drop-down menu). Prescribers now need to consider if a unit has been used and saved as a favorite. If the unit is no longer valid for that drug, it will need to be updated before it can be used.
Historical prescriptions written with units that are no longer valid need to be edited and a valid unit selected before they can be sent. These changes are designed to create effective and efficient workflow.
