AdvancedMD Reaches Major Milestone with 21st Century Cures Act Certification

EMR/EHR

AdvancedMD ended 2022 with a big win. After a three-year process that involved the efforts of multiple teams, our organization was awarded the 21st Century Cures Act Certification by the Office of the National Coordinator (ONC) for Health Information Technology.

What does this mean for AdvancedMD? First established in 2016, the ONC’s Cures Act Certification sets the standard for healthcare developers, ensuring EHR platforms meet specific requirements around interoperability, usability, and security. Most importantly, the certification confirms our suite of solutions meet the needs of patients, doctors, and healthcare organizations.

According to Tim Constantino, VP, and head of product at AdvancedMD, the road to earning the certification involved a lot of heavy lifting by team members who already had full workloads. “I couldn’t be prouder of what they achieved,” said Tim.

The 21st Century Cures Act Certification Process

In addition to our product management, product engineering, EHR and interop teams being part of the process, AdvancedMD worked directly with the Drummond Group to ensure we met all of the certification requirements. It was an incredibly complicated operation with contributions from team members spanning five different time zones.

The current version of the certification – dubbed the 2015 Update Edition of the Cures Act – included five entirely new standards, along with revisions to several previous requirements. The new requirements were focused on electronic health information (EHI) export capabilities, a standardized API for patient and population services, and privacy and security attestation criteria.

You can find more information about the 21st Century Cures Act Certification process on the ONC’s website or view the full list of requirements met by AdvancedMD.

Why the 21st Century Cures Act Certification Matters

ONC is the principal federal entity that oversees health information technology standards and the electronic exchange of health information nationwide. Organizationally, ONC is part of the Office of the Secretary for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). It has two primary objectives: 1.) Advancing the development and use of health IT capabilities; and 2.) Establishing expectations for data sharing.

First launched in 2010, ONC’s voluntary certification program was created to set industry standards for healthcare IT platforms. The 21st Century Cures Act Certification process created by ONC was in response to the 21st Century Cures Act legislation. The certification aims to support “seamless and secure access, exchange, and use of electronic health information.”

Ultimately, receiving a 21st Century Cures Act Certification demonstrates our organization’s commitment to being a healthcare IT leader, delivering innovative solutions that exceed industry standards. AdvancedMD has always prioritized usability, interoperability, and security – being recognized by ONC with this certification reinforces our position as a leading EHR, practice management and patient engagement solution.

“[Our] patients are very well-educated and well-informed, and they want to see results quickly. The practice has to run extremely efficiently and be accessible to them. The nice thing about [AdvancedMD] is it has allowed me to be more efficient both in and out of the office. Now I don’t have to come back into the office, which is great for my family and everything else. It saves me a lot of time – probably an hour a day on the three days I work in the second office.”
